Compact Catering Pods: Built for Urban Mobility & Easy Operation

How to choose a catering pod

The Pod is a classic model designed specifically for small businesses. Featuring custom fiberglass front and rear end caps and a body built from galvanized steel tubing and sheet metal, it boasts a compact, highly refined aesthetic.

A common misconception is that all Pods are classified as O1 trailers—weighing under 750 kg and requiring no braking system. In reality, depending on the overall dimensions, a Pod's weight varies and can fall into either the O1 or O2 category.

Four Steps To Pinpoint The Right Model

1. Map out your equipment: List the exact dimensions of every appliance you plan to install inside the trailer, then draw a basic layout sketch. This step will help you pinpoint the precise body length you need.

2. Determine your interior space: Work out your aisle clearance. The Pod comes in two standard body widths: 1,650 mm and 2,000 mm. Subtract your counter depth from the body width to get your aisle measurement. Check if this gives you enough room to work comfortably and move equipment through; if it does, you’ve locked in your ideal trailer width.

3. Select your exterior style: With your length and width decided, you can pick your body design. The Dome style accommodates both 1,650 mm and 2,000 mm widths, while the Square style is available exclusively in the 2,000 mm width.

4. Choose your axle configuration: If your chosen length supports both single-axle and tandem-axle setups, select the option that best matches your target load capacity.

There is no major difference in the floor plan or layout between the Dome and Square models. However, the interior of the Square feels more spacious thanks to its extended flat ceiling.

If you prefer an open, roomy environment, the Square is a fantastic choice—and it has become increasingly popular over the past two years. On the other hand, the Dome maintains that iconic, classic Pod look while accommodating both 1,650 mm and 2,000 mm widths, offering you greater flexibility.

Sizing Guide

Our Catering Pod comes in two standard widths—1,650 mm and 2,000 mm—along with 12 different length options. With so many combinations, how do you quickly pinpoint the model that fits your operations best?

To help you visualize your ideas rather than just guessing, we’ve put together a lineup of real customer builds. Below, you’ll find detailed breakdown dimensions and floor plans from past projects, giving you a clear, realistic feel for what each size can accommodate.

Keep in mind that the same trailer size can serve completely different menus. A layout that works for an espresso setup can easily be reconfigured for tacos or dessert carts. These examples are meant to inspire your design, but every build can be fully customized to your specific needs.

If you’re looking for a single axle food trailer that doesn’t need a heavy truck to tow, this is the one. The Pod 2300 measures just 2.3 meters long and 1.65 meters wide—small enough to park in a tight festival spot, light enough to pull with a standard SUV. It weighs around 580 kg fully built. Inside, it comes with everything a beginner needs to open a coffee cart: a commercial espresso machine, a burr grinder, a three-bowl sink system, and cabinet storage for cups, syrups, and a small fridge. No wasted space. No unnecessary add-ons. Just the essentials, laid out for single-person operation. We designed this as our most affordable mobile coffee pod for sale—ideal for someone testing the market before scaling up. It’s also a popular choice among eco-conscious owners who want a lightweight food trailer with a smaller carbon footprint. It's built for events where space is tight but demand is high—farmers' markets, music festivals, busy street corners. At 2.5 meters long and 2.0 meters wide, this single axle food trailer for events tows easily behind a standard SUV. It's essentially a mobile kitchen trailer for 2 people—comfortable for solo operation on slow days, roomy enough for two to work side by side when the lunch rush hits. If you're shopping for a street food trailer for festivals, this one checks all the boxes: easy to park , equipped to serve fast, and built to last. And because it comes from a custom food trailer manufacturer , you can tailor the layout, color, and equipment to your menu.

Pod 3800 sits on a heavy-duty tandem axle with a 2,500 kg load capacity, so it can handle serious equipment and inventory without breaking a sweat. The interior is split into two zones: one side for high-output hot food—fryers, griddles, grilled mains—and the other for high-margin drinks like espresso, cold brew, or fresh juice. That means you're selling coffee in the morning, burgers at lunch, and fries late into the night. One trailer, non-stop revenue. At 3.8 meters long and 2.0 meters wide, the Pod 3800 gives you full-size mobile kitchen capability without going oversized. Up front, there are two under-counter refrigerators—enough cold storage to run a full day without restocking. Toward the back, the cooking zone is spacious enough to keep ticket times short during peak hours. And along the service window, there's room for an espresso machine or a dessert display case.Whether you're searching for a dual axle food trailer, a fully equipped mobile kitchen trailer for events, this setup delivers the output, flexibility, and reliability you need.

Specs & Layout

Before you plan your layout – A Few Things Most Buyers Miss

1. Exterior size isn't interior size

It's easy to look at the external dimensions (say, 3,800 × 2,000 mm) and start planning where everything goes. But two things eat into that space:

  • Wall thickness. The panels and insulation take up about 10-20cm off the total interior length/width.
  • Wheel bumps. The tires push inward about 25 cm high. The length varies depending on the trailer length, but they always take up space under the counter.

So when you're measuring for equipment, use the interior dimensions—not the exterior ones.

2. Three things to check before you buy equipment

  • Counter height (our default recommendation)

Main work surface: 950 mm – comfortable for most people standing and working.

Cooking area (fryer, griddle): 600–700 mm – lower so you can see into the pan and flip without reaching up.

Both can be adjusted if you're taller or shorter.

  • Space under the counter

If you're putting a fridge, storage drawers, or a water tank underneath, you need to account for:

Where the wheel well sits (25 cm high)

The thickness of the countertop itself

A few centimeters of air gap so the equipment can breathe

  • Leave a buffer

Plan for about 10–15 cm of extra space around each piece of equipment. This gives you room to:

Reach in for installation

Deal with actual dimensions being slightly larger than listed

Swap or upgrade equipment later without rebuilding the whole counter

3. Not sure? Send us your layout idea

If you already have equipment in mind but aren't 100% sure it fits, just send us your list or sketch. We'll draw up an accurate interior layout for you before anything gets built.

Pod buying FAQ

Can I tow a food trailer with a standard SUV, or do I need a heavy truck?
It depends on the size and total weight (GVWR) of your build. Compact models like our single-axle Pod 2300 and Pod 2500 weigh under 750–1,000 kg and tow easily behind standard SUVs or light crossovers. Larger double-axle models (such as our 3.8m or 4m Square trailers) carry higher load capacities up to 2,500 kg and require a mid-to-full-size truck or SUV with appropriate towing power and integrated trailer braking systems.
Does the trailer price include kitchen equipment, or is it just an empty shell?
We offer both. You can order a fully fitted, turn-key mobile kitchen complete with commercial fryers, heavy-duty griddles, range hoods, and under-counter refrigeration, or a fully wired "empty shell" if you prefer to install your own appliances. Every quote from Chris Machinery clearly itemizes the body build, electrical system, water setup, and onboard equipment with zero hidden surprises.
How do food trailer vs food truck cost comparisons stack up for startups?
In every food trailer vs food truck cost breakdown, trailers come out ahead for a mobile kitchen startup. A food trailer requires a significantly lower upfront investment, has lower insurance rates, and eliminates engine maintenance costs—allowing you to start your mobile food business with much lower financial risk.
How do I handle the international shipping and customs clearance?
We can handle the ocean shipping for you from our factory directly to your nearest port. Here is how simple the process is: Once your trailer passes final inspection, Chris Machinery books sea freight; When the trailer arrives at your local port, you can clear customs yourself or hire a local customs broker (we can recommend one) to handle the duties, taxes with the documents we provide;Once cleared, you simply hook the trailer to your tow vehicle at the port or arrange a flatbed transport to deliver it to your doorstep.
