Container Food Trailers & Mobile Kitchen Builds | Chris Machinery

Mobile container kitchens are fast becoming the top choice for more food operators. They hit the sweet spot: combining the maxed-out interior space of a square trailer with the high resale value and head-turning appeal of an Airstream. It tackles both core worries in one single build.

First things first: road legality. Before spending a dime, make sure your rig can actually hit the road. At Chris Machinery, our builds hold full EU WVTA certification and US DOT compliance, making legal registration and local licensing hassle-free. Next, check your car's towing capacity. Plenty of folks buy one only to find out their car can't tow it, forcing them to drop serious cash on a pickup truck before they’ve even opened for business.

The biggest thing about a shipping container? It's built to last. Twenty years? Easy. The frame won't give you a single headache. Before putting your order in, drop us a line. We'll show you container trailers sitting on our production line, along with the actual materials, specs, and dimensions we use. Once you see it, you'll know exactly why they're built like tanks, and why they hold their value so well. No throwing money at a new rig every 3 to 5 years, and no slashing the price when it's time to resell. That's why more and more entrepreneurs are building their real business on a container food trailer.

As for floorplan, once those basics are out of the way, you can reference the same layout logic we use on our Chris Machinery square-body trailers. It makes it simple to lock in your setup.

Double-Wall Container Food Trailer: 2mm Steel + 5cm Insulation

Here are some specs to help you choose the right container trailer.

First, the container frame is heavy, so overall weight limits the length range. We recommend these six sizes: 4000 / 4500 / 5000 / 5500 / 5800 / 6000 mm.

Weight ranges from 1,500 kg to 2,800 kg. Current total load capacity is 3,200 kg. We plan to increase it to 3,600 kg by 2027–2028. So first, make sure your tow vehicle can handle the weight.

The body uses a double-layer construction. The outer layer is 2 mm container-grade steel sheet, with a 5 mm frame underneath — forming a tough outer shell. Inside, we follow the same standard as our square-body trailers: 5 cm of insulation plus fiberglass interior panels (or stainless steel if you prefer). That gives you thermal performance and a clean, flat interior surface.

Entry Compact Container Trailer

Length:
4000 mm
Width:
2200 mm
Axle:
Tandem Axle
Shape:
Square
Material:
Paint

The shortest container trailer in our lineup, built on a 2200 mm industrial square body—not a Pod. At 4 to 4.5 meters, it delivers a heavy-duty footprint without overcommitting on length. Inside, the space is finished with smooth FRP wall panels (glass-reinforced plastic) for easy cleaning and durability. The layout features stainless steel counters, a robust range hood, and under-bench fridge space, designed for efficient movement. As a proper commercial food trailer, it runs on a tandem axle for the stability heavy equipment demands. Perfect for focused menus like coffee, burgers, or fries. Ideal for weekend side hustles, smaller events, or tight parking spots. If you're comparing a container trailer vs pod, this model gives you industrial bones and full function in a compact frame.

Width:
2200 mm
Axle:
Tandem Axle
Shape:
Square
Material:

The standard container working length for serious daily operation. At 5 to 5.5 meters, this food trailer handles long hours and a full fry or grill line without cramping your workflow. The interior showcases long stainless steel prep counters, a heavy-duty exhaust hood, and durable FRP wall panels that withstand high-volume use. With a tandem axle as the typical configuration, stability is locked in for heavy loads. The 2200 mm width keeps the kitchen layout comfortable for multiple crew members. Ideal for gourmet street food, high-volume catering, or a full-time mobile kitchen. It’s the workhorse concession trailer that bridges compact and max-size, giving you reliable all-day output and manageable ROI.

Width:
2200 mm
Axle:
Tandem Axle
Shape:
Square
Material:
Paint

The longest bodies in the Container series. At 5.8 to 6 meters, this is the max before crossing into our standard Square lineup—if you need 6500 or 7000 mm, that length lives on Square, not this container trailer. This unit features double opening windows with an external fold-out table, maximizing customer-facing service. Inside, FRP wall panels pair with max prep space, serious storage, and extended equipment lines. Tandem axle is standard for this industrial box. Built for operators running multiple menus (fried chicken, tacos, pizza) from one window. The service window setup shines for high volume and variety. It’s the top-tier custom food trailer for those wanting heavy-duty capacity without jumping to a full custom build.

Specs & Layout

A good trailer is a well-laid-out trailer. Smart workflow and counter heights that match how you actually work make all the difference. Here's how I'd design mine:

1. Start with the door and windows.

Figure out where the front and rear are, and where the door and service windows go. This sets everything else in motion — don't skip it.

2. Measure the interior and check for conflicts.

Say the interior width is 2,100 mm. First, figure out how much aisle width you need based on your own build and whether you'll be working alone or with someone else. Whatever's left is your usable space. If I think I need 800 mm of aisle, I grab a tape measure and actually stand in that space to feel it. If it works, I move on. One thing to keep in mind: this is a mobile kitchen, not a house. Function comes first. Sometimes you have to trade a bit of comfort for practicality.

3. Lock in the aisle width, then split the rest.

If 800 mm still feels right, I've got 1,200 mm left — two countertops at 600 mm each. Looks good on paper. Now immediately check your equipment depth. If everything fits under 600 mm, you're set. But say a fryer is 700 mm deep. Then I ask three questions: Will the overhang get in the way during use? Can I find a shallower replacement? If neither works, can I give up some aisle space or shrink the other counter? Going through these questions usually gets me to a solid layout pretty fast.

4. Height matters just as much.

By now I've roughly figured out the length by placing the equipment. Next is height. Let's say 950 mm feels comfortable for a standing work surface. But once you add the equipment itself, consider your own height, the counter height, and the equipment height. If you're constantly reaching up to work, it wears you down shift after shift — trust me, this one matters more than you'd think. Actually stand in position and simulate the motion before locking in your counter height.

5. Take your draft to the factory for a final check.

Some things look different once they're being built. A good manufacturer will catch issues early and often suggest smarter alternatives based on what they've seen work before.

Container buying FAQ

Is this a real shipping container?
No. They are not converted, second-hand ocean shipping containers. They are purpose-built food trailers designed to mimic the iconic shipping container aesthetic, but in slightly smaller, road-optimized dimensions with a fully food-grade interior build.
How heavy is a container food trailer, and what can tow it?
Depending on the size (ranging from 4000 mm to 6000 mm), an empty container trailer weighs between 1,500 kg and 2,800 kg, with a current total load capacity of 3,200 kg. Because of the solid steel frame, they are heavier than standard aluminum rigs. You’ll need a mid-to-full-size pickup truck or an SUV with a high towing rating—always double-check your vehicle’s pulling capacity before ordering to avoid unexpected truck upgrades.
Are Chris Machinery container food trailers road-legal in the US and Europe?
Yes. Every container kitchen trailer built by Chris Machinery holds full EU WVTA certification and US DOT compliance. This ensures your rig meets all structural, axle, lighting, and braking standards required for hassle-free street registration and local health department licensing.
How long does a shipping container food trailer last?
A container food trailer can easily last 20+ years. Built with a 5 mm structural steel frame, 2 mm container-grade outer steel sheet, and a heavy-duty chassis, these rigs handle daily road vibration without structural fatigue. Their rugged durability also translates to exceptionally high resale value compared to traditional food trucks that need replacing every 3 to 5 years.
Can I customize the interior layout of my container kitchen trailer?
Absolutely. The interior layout follows the exact same proven design logic as our popular Chris Machinery square-body trailers. You can freely configure cooklines, refrigeration, prep stations, ventilation hoods, and service windows to fit your specific menu and workflow.
